This simple screening may help you be the first to notice changes in your child’s spine. To check for potential signs of scoliosis in your child, have them disrobe and stand relaxed with arms at their sides. Here is what to look for:
Is there head level and centered over their trunk?
Are their shoulders the same height?
Are their hips at the same level?
When bent forward with arms dropping down towards feet, is the rib cage level on both sides?
If you answered NO to one or more of these questions or if you have questions or concerns about your or your child’s spinal health please call Verve Chiropractic and Associates for more information.
EVALUATION, EDUCATION, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT
Scoliosis is a progressive disease of curvature of the spine. It can affect people of all ages; not only children and adolescents, but also adults. Scoliosis can result not only in an unlevel body, it can cause headaches, shortness of breath, back pain, digestive problems, menstrual-cycle disturbances, leg, hip, and knee pain, chronic fatigue and mood swings. The majority of scoliosis cases require non-surgical treatment.
The National Institute of Health reports, in more than 80% of the cases, a specific cause of scoliosis is not found. The most common type is idiopathic scoliosis in children pre-teen to early teen years. Girls are more likely than boys to have this type of scoliosis. Scoliosis can run in families; those with scoliosis in your family should have regular checkups by the chiropractor. Treatment for scoliosis is based on the patient’s age, the patient’s likely growth, the type of scoliosis and the degree and pattern of the curve.
SpineCor Bracing is the first and only truly dynamic brace, which provides a progressive correction of Idiopathic Scoliosis from 15º Cobb angle and greater. The SpineCor Brace is made up of two sections:
The use of a bodysuit under the brace is advised for hygienic reasons; it will help to keep the brace cleaner for longer and to add comfort; it will provide a barrier between the brace and your body, reducing the likelihood of the brace rubbing. To facilitate going to the toilet; you only need to detach the snaps of the crotch bands and those of the bodysuit, avoiding removal of the brace.
The doctor will check every 4 to 6 months to see if the curve is getting better or worse. Observation is used for those who have a curve of less than 25 degrees and are still growing. Chiropractic treatment, electrical stimulation, nutritional supplements and exercise are available at Verve Chiropractic and Associates. The doctors will work with patients to help to straighten the spine or keep curves from getting worse.
